Book by Hall, Richard

As is obvious from the acknowledgments, chapter notes, and appendixes, Hall ( Uninvited Guests , Aurora Press, 1988) went through a great deal of material for this documentary. And it shows. During this modern time of debate over the worthiness of females for combat, his book is surprisingly timely. After reading it the mere thought of a woman with a gun should turn any soldier's blood to Kool-Aid. The adventures of Anna Etheridge, Sara Edmonds, and Loreta Janeta Velazquez as well as the exploits of nameless other heroines in combat is thrilling to read even after a century and a third. Many of these women served with husbands, lovers, or brothers, but many served with the purest spirit of patriotism and adventure. They invented the double-agent concept before there was an 007. Recommended for Civil War freaks and general readers.

His failure to incorporate the arguments and conclusions of recent feminist theory on women warriors restricts freelance writer Hall's work to a simple narrative, but his book has its strengths. He concentrates on women, disguised as men, who served in the Civil War as soldiers, and succeeds in clearing away many of the romantic assumptions about the subject. What emerges is a compendium of fact and legend, interesting as much for its mythic aspect as for its historical accuracy. The text devotes too little space to the roles played during the war by soldiers' wives and their children. But despite its flaws, the book makes a useful contribution to a growing body of literature on "women who run with the wolves." Photos not seen by PW.
