Ages 6-8. Peters retells a Czech fairy tale in which an aging king asks his three daughters to say how much they love him. The first two flatter him shamelessly, but the youngest replies that she loves him more than salt. Insulted and incensed, he banishes her from his kingdom. After a terrible storm washes away all the salt in the land, the king realizes the value of his youngest daughter's love and falls ill until she returns. Each page of text faces a full-page illustration, a colorful painting in naive style. Although the telling could be simpler and more fluid, this picture book will appeal to children seeking "princess books." Carolyn Phelan
