Lessons for teaching writing to children in grades K-3, using a narrative style, show real children investigating poetry, revision strategies, writing in science and other areas. Each chapter ends with a "Notes" page outlining the lesson plan. Additional chapters give suggestions for using music, sign language, portfolios, and literature in the primary classroom.

Katie Johnson has been teaching for more than 25 years, children of all ages and teachers of all grades K-12. After eighteen years of teaching first grade in Maine, she moved to Seattle where she is a Title I reading teacher in the Shoreline School District. She is a field instructor for the University of Washington-Bothell campus Teacher Certification Program and teaches literacy classes for Lesley College as well. She writes in the morning and reads in the evening, and watches her granddaughters grow.
from Chapter 5, "Connecting with Sign."
"Buddy was a small, tired, scrappy six-year-old. He was pretty much always hungry, had a charming smile that he didn't yet realize the power of, and tended to be suspicious of kindness.... Not surprisingly, Buddy didn't have much inclination for learning. In addition, he had difficulty relating sounds and symbols, so that even when he was interested and curious, the world of print made very little sense to him. He did just fine with song, memorizing the words and putting the tunes into his voice, or vice versa, just fine. But reading was a disaster. I was discouraged, too."
