Pickett’s Charge was the last best chance for a Confederate victory in the Civil War and came during the final day’s fighting at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. While Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s greatest gamble has been told and retold, the heroic stand of the Union forces has received scant attention.
Released during this 150th anniversary of the epic battle of Gettysburg, Pickett’s Charge: The Untold Story tells the story of the heroic defenders of the Union and especially the Philadelphia Brigade and its commander General Alexander Webb. Webb won a Congressional Medal of Honor for his valor that afternoon and later became President of the City College of New York. With the outcome of the Civil War in the balance, Webb and his fellow soldiers stopped the Confederates at a spot known as the High Water Mark of the Confederacy and saved the Union.

From the Author:
Pickett's Charge: The Untold Story took more than four years to research and write. I was at the Angle and looked across the field and I knew a lot about Lee and the Confederate charge. My knowledge of the Union defenders was minimal. The previous books on Pickett's Charge detailed the Confederate planning and execution of the engagement. The Union defense usually received little attention. My book is 90 percent or more on the Union defenders, especially the Philadelphia Brigade. I spend almost countless hours going through the records at Gettysburg National Park. I used the ORs and went to a number of historical societies.
Barricade Books of Fort Lee, New Jersey, did a wonderful job with the design and publishing of the book. Also, the book contains photographs from the famous J. Howard Wert Gettysburg Collection, some made public for the first time.
