Among the people of the Ojibwa First Nation, there is a belief that the northern forest is inhabited by invisible, irascible little folk called Memegawish, who take delight in hiding knives, canoe paddles, teapots, and other possessions of unwary human visitors to the wilderness. The Ojibwa say: "You cannot see the little folk, but if you are sitting by the fire at night and you listen very closely, you can hear them in the treetops laughing at the tricks they played on you." Over the years on many forest trails, I have heard the laughter and joined in with it. I hope that you may listen by your fire and laugh with them too.
