PreSchool-Grade 2–Blomgren's rhymed couplets catalog a variety of animals and plants that live around and on an ancient evergreen tree. "Centuries came and centuries went./Mighty storms blew and great branches bent./And always the tree headed up to the sky,/to the gray misty clouds where the bald eagles fly." The flora and fauna include herds of cow elk, a pine marten, a flying squirrel, and a spotted owl, and trilliums, huckleberries, and harebells. Gabriel's lush illustrations add to the romantic view of the forest environment. The book is more a paean to the wonders of nature than an information source. As such, it could serve as an introduction to a forest walk, abridged as needed to hold the attention of young listeners. Barbara Bash's Ancient Ones (Sierra Club, 1994) offers a more straightforward account of a majestic tree's place in an old-growth forest.– Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato
