As in all of Wishbone's adventures, this contemporary crisis segues into a literary parallel, here a footloose version of poor country boy Jack's quest to retrieve his family's stolen goods from the giant. A talking dog, paltry puns, and a thoroughly didactic pair of stories-one a somewhat fleshed-out fairy tale and the other about a headstrong puppy facing up to a towering school janitor-combine to create a disjointed and not particularly compelling chapter book.
