"Has anyone in your family had a nose job?" "In what way do you think you most disappointed your parents?" "When were you first aware that you were Jewish, or that other people weren't?" The Jewish Book of Questions, a gift book by Cathy Crimmins, poses 199 such queries. The book consists entirely of questions: no answers are provided, and no guidance is given. In her introduction, the author says that she hopes readers will use the book alone, as an occasion for self-reflection, and with others, to encourage discussion of "all facets of Jewish identity and culture, from the trivial to the profound." It does pose some questions about high and serious topics ("What do you value most about being Jewish? What do you like least about it?"), although the overall tone is more lighthearted ("If you were a famous singer who happened to be Jewish, would you record a Christmas album?"). --Michael Joseph Gross
