Kindergarten-Grade 2 - In Pied Piper fashion, the Banjoman comes into town, wearing his long woolen coat, stovepipe hat, and natty yellow trousers. His music is wonderful, causing the children to dance, birds to sing, and animals to scamper delightedly. Then one of the strings breaks and all replacements - a kite string, a vine, a spider's web - fail miserably. While everyone sits around crying, a little bluebird comes up with an idea: as the Banjoman plays, the bird sings the missing notes, and the music is more beautiful than ever. Bordered text, English at the top, adequate Spanish in a smaller font underneath, is matched with pastel pictures on soft gray backgrounds. The composition and balance are excellent and the colors are clear and deep. With their rounded faces and chubby legs, the cartoon characters are reminiscent of the Precious Moments figures. Though a little lacking in literary merit when compared to other music-themed books such as Pete Seeger's Abiyoyo (S & S, 1986), this title still has considerable child appeal and a timely message about cooperation.
