For many readers, this will be a wonderful, magical book, an apocryphal gospel from the viewpoint of a late first-century woman as imagined by a 20th-century professor of liturgy, worship, and spirituality. In this gospel, women are central, while men are equal partners in narrative sections (the parables are universal but in feminist language). The retelling, in contemporary language, of the canonical gospel story, together with a few noncanonical traditions, especially those concerning Mary Magdalene, provides freshness and new emphases to supplement old, familiar ones. While the book will especially appeal to feminists, it is for everyone--in the tradition of sacred story. Winter has written a book as empowering to women as her earlier Crossroad books, WomanWord (1990), WomanWisdom (1991), and WomanWitness (1991), and probably more accessible and appealing to a wider audience. Highly recommended.
