In Creative Climbers, Paul Williams brings new life to vertical gardening, offering ingenious planting designs and clever ideas for structures and supports. Vigorous roses twisting up an apple tree, an arbor hung with succulent clusters of cherry tomatoes, and a teepee of antique gardening tools entwined with clematis are just a few of the striking ideas he has designed especially for this book. He demonstrates that the immense variety of climbers is equaled only by the range of structures upon which they may be grown. And that once matched with their supports, climbers play a vital and versatile role in garden design, providing dramatic focal points and vertical interest, partitioning gardens into intimate spaces, screening unsightly areas, as well as conserving precious lateral space in the small garden. To demonstrate the stunning effects that can be achieved, Williams also offers eight step-by-step projects. A marvelous addition to any gardener's library, Creative Climbers is complete with a detailed directory of 150 ideal plants, notes on cultivation, and 120 color photos. Paul Williams' previous book is Creative Containers.

Williams, head gardener at Bourton House in Gloucestershire, England, begins his helpful guide to growing climbing plants with a chapter on garden design, stressing the importance of color, shapes, patterns, and scent. He discusses the use of climbing vegetables and fruit, climbers as ground cover, and those grown in pots, greenhouses, and sunrooms. Other chapters deal with growing plants on walls, fences, pergolas, arbors, tunnels, arches, pyramids, and obelisks, as well as on trees, shrubs, and hedges. There are instructions on building a trellis and fans, a balcony partition, a secluded arbor, a scarecrow, and a willow screen. Also included is a comprehensive plant directory and 120 color photographs. George Cohen
