Author/Illustrator: Stewart Lees
Stewart Lees' other works include Anna Growing Up on the Farm and My First Word Book. He lives in Norfolk, England and was inspired to write this book after learning that many of Norfolk's people had become colonists at Jamestown.
Grade 3-5-In this picture book, a boy and his father set sail in 1616 for the new settlement of Jamestown. Life at sea is rough, with severe weather and limited rations. However, Sam assists Tom, the cook, in the galley, and is guaranteed extra rations in return for his help. When approaching the storeroom one day, he hears noises from within, and locks the door. The thief inside turns out to be a crew member named Flint, who is brutally flogged, and Sam knows that he has made a nasty enemy. When Flint steals Sam's father's moneybag, the man is arrested for having no money, and is threatened with slavery. In the end, the thief is exposed, and the money is returned to its owner. The beginning of the story is abrupt, and the mixture of fictitious and factual characters is confusing, as brief mention is made of John Rolfe and Pocahontas. Also, it's unfortunate that the history of the Jamestown settlement is placed at the back of the book rather than at the beginning to give children some background knowledge of the story. The colored-pencil drawings are beautifully rendered and will help carry readers through the text. Unless there is a strong need for historical fiction for this audience, consider this a marginal purchase.
