Katherine Von Ahnen is the award-winning author ofCharlie Young Bear (Roberts Rinehart, 1994). She lives in New Jersey.
Gr. 4^-6. It's 1823, and the Mesquakie Indians are forced to leave their "forever place" and cross the Mississippi to find a new home. Naosaqua, 12-years-old and beginning to think about marriage, finds the leaving disorienting and the journey difficult, yet with the help of those who love her, she begins to feel that happiness is possible in the Mesquakies' new land. The dialogue sounds a bit formal at times, but the narrative tells an involving story while introducing readers to the Mesquakie way of life. Part of the Council for Indian Education series, this is recommended for larger collections. Carolyn Phelan
