Gr 1-3--This nonsensical picture story has some fun with the names of 28 kinds of insects. Each is featured in a full-page, full-color cartoon, showing one or more of the insects engaged in the human activity suggested by their common name. Lovebugs smooch with puckered lips; Stink Bugs disrupt a ladybug's birthday party; Robber Flies crack a safe, etc. Every illustration is overlaid with a line of rhyming text identifying the insects and the behavior depicted. A realistic rendition of each type of insect also appears in the corner of each cartoon; however, actual sizes are not indicated here. The subtitle is misleading, as no description or depiction of actual insect behavior is provided except in a very limited glossary. Some of the illustrations are grotesque; a couple are stereotypical, such as the pages depicting Gypsy Moths (a gap-toothed old woman/insect holds a crystal ball and tarot cards) and the Painted Lady Butterfly (a slant-eyed, white-faced oriental woman has a butterfly perched on one of her four outstretched "hands"). The rhyming is awkward and forced. ("Ambush Bugs surprising a bee, or.../Gypsy Moths dancing festively"). Joanne Ryder's excellent Where Butterflies Grow (Lodestar, 1989) provides accurate information. David Kirk's Miss Spider's Tea Party (1994) or Beverly Allinson's Effie (1991; o.p., both Scholastic) are fun titles with definite story lines and attractive cartoon illustrations.
