As the scion of a large Southern plantation lies dying in the late 1960s, the various people who know him recall his life, including his wife, Rowena; his servant Rutha; his granddaughter; and the plantation manager.

Some scientists think humans are hard-wired to strongly prefer the familiar, however detrimental to the human condition it might be. Consequently, the end of any era is inevitably tinged with poignancy, nostalgia, and usually not a little romanticizing as relief mingles with regret. At Henry Detroit's death at the end of the 1960s, the Longbow plantation dies and with it a way of life that includes old slave shanties and lynchings. Told from the varying points of view of a series of characters whose family trees are provided, the novel presents overlapping "panels" of reality and calls into question notions of perspective as young Henry copes with the death of his baby, and his wife, Rowena, realizes it is easier to speak with him when he isn't there. Erhart's well-crafted, compelling portrait of the Deep South from the Depression to the Vietnam era swings back and forth in time, encompassing even the letters from William Tecumseh Sherman, Rowena's grandfather, to his wife, which Rowena reads for comfort as her son ships out in 1941. In Crossing Bully Creek, Margaret Erhart employs an eclectic array of characters to chronicle the sometimes torrential swiftness, sometimes trickling slowness of change through the generations. At the heart of the story is Henry Detroit, Northern-born owner of Longbrow Plantation, now on his deathbed as the 1960s come to a close. Around him swirl servants, hired hands, and family, all gathered to preside over the death of life as they know it in the South. At Henry's bedside is his wife, Rowena, granddaughter of William Tecumseh Sherman, and Lewis Brown, who has attended several generations of bird hunters. Ready to come at the least word is Cole Jones, who runs the plantation for Detroit's son. Farther afield are Byrdine Dean, a cafe owner and palm reader, Ray Luken, who runs the dogs, and young Roosevelt Davis, an epileptic who looks for his road to redemption in books other than the Bible.Moving back and forth between the 1960s and the 1920s, Crossing Bully Creek captures the essential tragedy of race relations as well as the birth pangs of a more complex, more hope-filled South. Margaret Erhart's characters, black and white, recall a time when old traditions begin to give way, subtly transformed by the small, determined acts of a few individuals.
