From the cave dwellings in Goreme, Turkey, to the Millennium Dome in London, England, this oversized volume presents a true visual history of architecture through more than 400 color photographs. The author is manager of picture research at the Arcaid Picture Library, which represents many of the world's architectural photographers, including cofounder Richard Bryant. The concise, 29-page essay on the history of architecture, well written but lacking citations or a bibliography, will quickly be overlooked in favor of the large number of high-quality, full-page reproductions of striking images of most of the familiar icons of architectural history. Each image is labeled with the name of the structure, the architect, the date of its completion, a one-sentence description, the name of the photographer, and the catalog number from the Arcaid Picture Library. The well-conceived placement of the images does as much as the essay to explain the history of architecture. Highly recommended as an excellent and reasonably priced book on architecture for all public libraries and as a visual collection supporting academic programs at all levels.
