From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6?In East Texas, three cousins take shelter from a sudden thunderstorm in a ruined house and discover a trap door. It leads to a hidden storage cellar that appears to be the scene of a long-ago tragedy. A row of six antique, rotting teddy bears is carefully laid out on the floor. One wears a valuable Native American fetish necklace. A child's tea set is scattered across the room as if overturned in hasty flight. The cousins decide that the mystery will help to enliven a dull summer, but the investigation quickly becomes dangerous. A series of increasingly serious "accidents" occur, always with a stranger in black nearby. The plot moves briskly with plenty of suspense and even a tiny touch of romance. The young detectives are well-developed, realistic characters who should appeal to mystery fans.?Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL
