Ducks Unlimited announces the publication of the first book in more than 40 years to offer waterfowlers new methods for using decoys.
The book, Decoys and Proven Methods for Using Them, by veteran waterfowler and regular Ducks Unlimited magazine contributor Wade Bourne, promises to replace Ralf Coykendall’s waterfowling classic Decoys and How to Rig Them, first published in 1955.
“Much has changed since those early days when wooden decoys were ‘state of the art’ and ‘adding a little motion’ meant simply rigging hand-pulled feeder or swimmer decoys,” says Bourne. “My goal was to cover all the basics of using decoys, including the improvements of the past half century. ”
The heart of the book features a wide variety of duck and goose hunting layouts from the country’s best guides and freelance hunters. Included are more than 30 detailed diagrams and descriptions of spreads and strategies for hunting ducks and geese in small ponds and marshes, large open lakes, coastal bays, rivers, flooded timber, agricultural fields, and many other waterfowling settings.
Says Bourne, “Many experts shared their advice on a wide range of waterfowling situations. In that sense, this book really represents more waterfowling know-how than any one person could hope to compile in a lifetime of hunting experiences.”
The new book offers the latest advances in decoy technology, including recent developments in decoy materials, keel designs, and mechanical motion decoys like the RoboDuck and Fatal de DUCKtion wing-spinners. “The idea is to help waterfowlers make sense out of the many decoy products on the market, so they can apply them to their individual hunting needs,” says Bourne.
Through the decades, North American waterfowlers have devised many decoys and many decoy strategies for luring ducks and geese into close shotgun range. Inventive minds and trial-and-error testing have conjured up decoy systems for almost every setting imaginable. Here, for the first time, is a book that offers a variety of effective decoy spreads from some of the country's most successful waterfowling guides and freelancers. Included are strategies and spreads for hunting ducks and geese in small ponds and marshes, large open lakes, coastal bays, rivers, flooded timber, agricultural fields, and many other waterfowling settings.More than 30 detailed descriptions and diagrams of tried-and-true decoy layouts, plus information on everything from the history of decoy making to modern decoys, styles, sizes, rigging, and decoy movement make this the best how-to-decoy book ever.
