For nearly 80 years, the Ryder Cup has blossomed into one of golf’s greatest events, bringing together the best players in the world every two years on an international stage. From its humble beginnings when Samuel Ryder began providing the trophy to the winning team, no other event in golf shares the level of camaraderie and intense atmosphere as the Ryder Cup. Complete Illustrated History of the Ryder Cup covers all of these great competitions with beautiful, full-color photos showcasing the best moments in Ryder Cup history.

The biennial Ryder Cup golf contest between the US and Europe is one of the biggest, most pulsating- and often most controversial-sporting events in the world. In the last two contests, at the Belfry in 2002 and at Oakland Hills in 2004, the Europeans pulverized the Americans, turning the tables after the 1999 debacle at Brookline when the Stampeding American team prematurely celebrated victory before the last match was over. In 2004, most appropriately, it was Colin Montgomerie who sank the winning putt, confirming that such heroic and brilliantly consistent performances as players like him have achieved in the Ryder Cup rank as comparable achievements to the winning of a Major.
In this beautifully produced book, copiously illustrated with rare archive photography from the early years and stunning shots of recent contests, Dale Concannon takes us back to the Cup’s origins, when the wealthy seed merchant Samuel Ryder hit upon the idea of a golf tournament every two years between Britain and America-and was rewarded for his efforts with a crushing British defeat. He shows how the competition’s resurgence came at the end of the seventies, when prolonged American dominance and the emergence of scintillating new talents like Seve Ballesteros led to its reconfiguration as a US v Europe affair.
Since then it has been a seesaw battle, with breathtakingly close finishes and a ever-more-hysterical atmosphere, spilling over into gung-ho belligerence in the intensely fought "War on the Shore" at Kiawah Island in 1991 after the Gulf War, and then again at Brookline in 1999. But with the Ryder Cup moving to Ireland for the first time in 2006, such excesses have, as Dale Concannon shows, led to a reaffirmation of the Ryder Cup as the epitome of sportsmanlike demeanor at the same time as it is the most pressurized gladiatorial showdown for the world’s greatest golfers
Dale Concannon is an internationally acclaimed golf writer and former PGA golf pro with more than a dozen books to his name, including Driven, his best-selling biography of Nick Faldo. A regular contributor to many international golf magazines, he also owns one of the finest collections of early golf photography in the world. His previous books include Golf: The Early Days, From Tee to Green, The Round of My Life, Golfing Bygones and Bullets, Bombs and Birdies.
