With her father off to battle, Mattie McDonald endures the Civil War home front with her mother and their lone house slave, Jenna, at the family's small Virginia farm. Fear of plundering Union soldiers casts a shadow over their days in the war's waning months, but not enough to prevent them and their neighbors from harboring wounded Confederates. When handsome, gravely injured Will Hamilton is brought to the McDonalds' door, the brave women take up their duty. As Will recovers, the young soldier and Mattie develop a deep bond that will survive the war. In one of the story's best scenes, Mattie and her mother undertake a treacherous journey to return Will to the Confederate camp by smuggling him through Union lines as a deceased typhoid victim they are returning to family. Jenna's unswerving devotion to her kind masters, even after the war, is a sensitive political point, but this well-written historical romance, which is based on true events, gives an interesting up-close view of daily life during one of the most deadly and shattering conflicts in U.S. history.
