Synopsis

In Devotion Explosion: Getting Real with God, Christy Bowers writes to Christians who feel frustrated with their quiet time: "Intimacy with God is not a matter of being more disciplined or finding the right formula; it's a matter of sharing every experience with God throughout the day rather than limiting our communication to a daily appointment with God." She shows how intimacy with God develops as we approach Him with an attitude of devotion rather than a sense of duty. When this "devotion explosion" occurs in our lives, we find that we can't spend enough time with God.

From the Back Cover

Has your quiet time with God become an appointment with disappointment?

As young Christians, most of us learn that it is important to set aside a daily quiet time for Bible reading and prayer. To get the most out of this practice, we have been told, we need to have an encounter with God early in the morning (for at least 30 minutes), and we need a Bible reading plan, a journal, and a list of prayer requests that we can keep to measure the effectiveness of our prayers. Yet many of us struggle with a sense of failure and guilt because we are unable to live up to these daily expectations.

Author Christy Bower offers a compelling alternative to those who have ever experienced these "appointments with disappointment"

"Intimacy with God is not a matter of being more disciplined or finding the right formula; it is a matter of sharing every experience with God throughout the day rather than limiting our communication to a daily appointment with God."

Having a more intimate, meaningful relationship with God begins when you understand the difference between devotions and devotion: "Devotions are a matter of discipline: devotion is a matter of desire."

With questions at the end of each chapter for group or individual study, Devotion Explosion ignites your passion and shows you how to "get real with God" by helping you:

  • Learn the important qualities of an intimate relationship with God from biblical examples like Moses, Samuel, and Ezekiel.
  • Understand how to "pray without ceasing"
  • Develop a dynamic and meaningful personal Bible study.
  • Be honest and vulnerable with God.
  • Experience prayer as a dialogue--rather than a meaningless monologue

When you view spending time with God as a lifestyle rather than a scheduled appointment, intimacy naturally develops, and you will have a "devotion explosion" as you find that you can't spend enough time with God!
