Written by Hawaii's beloved Beatrice Krauss, an ethnobotanist who dedicated her life to the study of Hawaiian plants, this book covers the medicinal uses and preparation of 30 native plants. Beautiful artwork by Hawaiian illustrator Martha Noyes compliments the text. Plants in Hawaiian Medicine was the winner of the 2002 Ka Palapala Po okela Award for Excellence in Hawaiian Culture.

Ethnobotanist Beatrice H. Krauss enriched the lives of innumerable people through her research, teaching, writing, and volunteer service. The first woman to earn a degree in agriculture from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she later taught ethnobotany there and received several awards. Krauss was a plant physiologist and morphologist at the Pineapple Research Institute for 42 years, and a staff member at the Lyon Arboretum for 15 years. She founded the Manoa Valley History Project, served as president of the Hawaiian Botanical Society, and received awards from the Historic Hawaii Foundation and the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society. She completed the manuscript for Plants in Hawaiian Medicine shortly before her death in March 1998 at the age of 94.
"Beatrice Krauss was a beloved ethnobotanist who spent a great deal of her lifetime studying Hawaiian plants and their uses.... Each of the 30 plants covered here has its own chapter with a nicely consistent set of information for each one. Included for each plant are: notes on the plant family, ecosystem and the history of its arrival in Hawai'i; a physical description and drawing; general (non-medicinal) uses; ancient uses and contemporary uses." - Hawaii Island Journal"
