Tight junction proteins connect epithelial and endothelial cellsand, importantly, form selective barriers and channels forparacellular transportation.  Two types of tight junctionproteins—the claudin family (claudins-1 to -27) and the TAMPfamily (occludin, Marvel-D2, and tricellulin)—can bedistinguished molecularly and functionally.  Recent work hasfocused on delineating the functional significance of differencesin selective permeability, for example, by examining the regulatorymechanisms of tight junctions.  This work is of great clinicalimportance as many inflammatory or infectious diseases arecharacterized by increased permeability and the manipulation oftight junctions presents a new horizon in the development of noveltherapeutics.  The volume Barriers and Channels Formed byTight Junction Proteins II provides a detailed look at therecent advances in our understanding of tight junction regulationand dysregulation.  The papers included focus on three majorthemes: inflammation and gastrointestinal function; epithelialtransport, barrier modulation, and food components; and tightjunctions in intestinal and renal epithelia.
