Reviews

This "sourcebook" offers two types of resources for the one-person library (OPL): effective approaches to management issues and categorized lists of relevant resources. After an introduction to the real world of the one-professional library, issues are covered: time management; planning and prioritization; finances; working with others; technology; education, downsizing, outsourcing, and knowledge management; and the future of the OPL. These management chapters contain pearls of wisdom for all libraries, not just those that are small. The reference chapters list organizations, books and journals, vendors and suppliers, and discussion lists and World Wide Web sites. Seiss is publisher and editor of The One-Person Library: A Newsletter for Librarians and Management and The Solo Librarian's Sourcebook (Information Today, 1997). Read her book to learn the perspective required to adjust to changes in the communities we serve, whether corporate, medical, academic, school, or public all types of librarians need to focus on doing what's important to stay in business. Highly recommended for all librarians; it could also serve as a reality-based basic library management text. Margaret Allen, Library Consultant, Stratford, WI
