Snake is a political leader and beloved elder of the Winnebago people.
Born on the Winnebago Indian reservation in Nebraska during the Depression, Snake (1937-1993) overcame poverty and alcoholism to become Winnebago tribal chairman, environmentalist, writer, singer and national chairman of the American Indian Movement in the early 1970s.
