This second collection of columns from The Dallas Morning News serves up more gems of wisdom and wit from the acknowledged harbinger of taste. Stanley Marcus, who for more than 15 years entertained and challenged readers with his weekly column, lets his mind roam through subjects as diverse as advice, dieting, gardening, nonconformists, phobias, sports, toys, and weather.
"The most melancholy task I've ever performed was to tell a store buyer that she had bad taste. Such an accusation cuts to the quick as no other that I can recall, other than advising that a person's breath is bad. People will accept all other types of criticism with equanimity and even appreciation, but not those relating to taste and breath". -- from "Taste Is Now Everybody's Business"
"The quality that probably is most important in happy marriages, but seldom mentioned, is a short memory.... Nothing in life can be perfect, and certainly a long memory that remembers everything and forgets nothing can destroy almost any marriage". -- from "Short Memory Aids Marriage"
STANLEY MARCUS, Chairman Emeritus of the Neiman Marcus stores, received a B.A. degree from Harvard University and also attended Harvard Business School. A noted lecturer who published fine press miniature books out of The Somesuch Press, he wrote Minding the Store, Viewpoints of Stanley Marcus, and Stanley Marcus from A to Z all from the University of North Texas Press.
