This is probably the most complete reference on the Internet. It starts with an overview of communications and the history of the net, and goes on to discuss in some detail just about every aspect of the net. There are excellent treatments of very technical subjects such as firewalls, ISDN and bots. One of the book's strengths, though, is how it moves from basic how-to to wonderful sections on everyday net usage. A good glossary, an HTML quick reference, a detailed index, and a directory of Web sites round out an already superb volume. When the authors close with their view of the future of the net, it's advisable to pay attention--they obviously know their stuff. The accompanying CD-ROM contains complete books on Netscape and MS Internet Explorer, and net-related software.
