9781575580982: A Puritan Speaks To Our Dying Nation

Synopsis

For a long time, it seemed that the Puritans had been completely forgotten in the dust-heap of history. "Dead white men, " was the viewpoint of many modern critics. However, in the closing decades of the 20th century, there was a complete resurgence of interest in Puritan history, due to the influence of men like Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Iain H. Murray, and others. The Puritans are recognized again as a tour de force. In my homeland of Britain the Puritans are highly regarded, and many in the U.S.A. are also turning to them.

Dr. Hymers is to be praised for publishing one of Baxter's great books in modern, readable English. Be sure to read Dr. Hymers' own introduction about current America, which he calls the "Land of the Living Dead." Also, read his afterword at the end of the book. LIke many of the Puritan preachers, Dr. Hymers proclaims his message without fear or favor. You may not agree with every single statement, but you will agree when he tells you that "the future does not look bright for our churches." He makes us think deeply about the spiritual condition of this nation.

Dr. Hymers has placed the whole Christian public of the 21st century deeply in his debt, by making it possible for Richard Baxter to speak to our generation. By so doing, he may live to see America experience another Great Awakening, a time of God-sent revival.

About the Author

R. L. Hymers, Jr. is a graduate of the California State University at Los Angeles (B.A.), Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, Southern Baptist (M.Div.), San Francisco Theological Seminary, United Presbyterian (D.Min.) and Louisiana Baptist Theological Seminary, Baptist Bible Fellowship (Th.D.). He and his wife, Ileana, are the parents of twin sons, Robert Leslie III and John Wesley. Dr. Hymers worked with Southern Baptist Churches for many years. He became a fundamentalist by reading the books and sermons of the late Dr. John R. Rice. Dr. Hymers is the founding pastor of the Fundamentalist Baptist Tabernacle, the only Baptist church in the civic center of Los Angeles. Known for his strong stand for Biblical inerrancy and inner-city evangelism, Dr. Hymers is an unashamed old-time fundamentalist, who earnestly contends for the faith in the tradition of J. Frank Norris, John R. Rice, Bob Jones, Sr., and "Fighting Bob" Shuler. He has been in the ministry over forty-four years.

Review

"This book not only recognizes a critical present-day problem, but offers a practical and scriptural answer to it." -- Dr. J.B. Williams, Bob Jones University

"You have written the most desperately needed book of the last twenty-five years." -- Dr. E. Robert Jordan, Founder of Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary
