When she was ten, Linda Hayward wanted to be a teacher, a writer, and an editor. When she grew up, she became all three. As a writer, she is the author of more than 140 books for children, from picture books to beginning readers. As an editor, she launched First Stepping Stones and Early Step into Reading (Random House) and Road to Reading (Golden Books). As a teacher, she met the boys and girls who are featured in her stories. Linda lives in Naples, Florida. Page Eastburn O’Rourke wanted to be an artist from the time she was a young child. Recent books she has illustrated include Barnum’s Animals (Little Simon) and Bananas! (Charlesbridge Publishing).
Grade 1-3-This easy-to-read science story sets a bad example for students as the haphazard fulfillment of a homework assignment turns out well. While waiting for the school bus, Andy "wails" that he forgot to do his Plant Scavenger Hunt homework assignment that was given two weeks earlier. He walks into the tall grass and finds three of the five specimens he needs. When the bus comes, he races aboard and tapes what he has found to a piece of notebook paper. Other students have made elaborate charts and three-dimensional projects, and when Jeff shows a picture of a bur, Andy sees that one is stuck to his shoelace; now he has four of the required items. Then, during lunch, he finds the seeds he needs in his tangerine, and the assignment is complete. Full-color cartoons show the boy as he throws together his assignment and an active classroom filled with books, projects, posters, and plants.
