Grade 6-8-These clear, color-photo-filled books provide informative, balanced introductions to their respective religions and successfully distill the essential elements of Christianity and Judaism into 44 pages each. Chapters on the highlights of belief and history precede descriptions of family and public celebrations and worship, scriptures, pilgrimage sites, and subgroups (Christian denominations are defined by their worship style rather than differences of belief; Reconstructionist Jews are mentioned only once, and not discussed or described). Great men-Abraham, Moses, St. Paul-are covered briefly, as is the layout of buildings for worship. Roman Catholic reverence for saints is correctly described; however, the prohibition against image making is not mentioned in Judaism. The brevity of these books dictates simplification, and there are some omissions, e.g., arguably the word "Shoah" should have been used, as many other Hebrew terms are, and kippah should replace yarmulka. However, much is included in these lucid and readable texts.
