Grade 1-3-This country study opens with a map and includes two-page chapters on topics such as land, landmarks, homes, food, work, transportation, language, school, celebrations, and the arts. The half-page, full-color photographs clearly illustrate the simple, large-print text consisting of basic facts. The topic "Clothes" is slightly misleading, however, as it refers to the textile industry and not to how people dress; "Free Time" only covers sports. There is no mention of type of government or political leaders. Difficult and unfamiliar words are in bold print and defined in a glossary. A separate glossary of a few Gaelic words is included, along with a brief "Fact File." The inviting cover, the user-friendly layout, and the many photographs will attract children, but Brendan January's Ireland (Children's, 1999) is more informative.
