From the Introduction:

Welcome to MCSE Windows 2000 Foundations!

This book aims to help you become familiar with the terms, topics, technologies, and concepts that you need to understand before you can tackle Microsoft's new series of core exams for certification as a Windows 2000 MCSE.

To that end, the following section in this introduction contains information that explains the new Windows 2000 MCSE program and what's required of new candidates for this certification, as well as for MCSEs already certified on Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0. After that, you'll have a chance to read a more detailed overview of the book's content and how it relates to the Windows 2000 MCSE core exams. Finally, this introduction concludes with a survey of the book's layout and features to explain how it can best be used as the first step toward attaining MCSE certification for Windows 2000.

The Windows 2000 MCSE

An overview of the Windows 2000 MCSE must begin with descriptions of exam categories and the number of exams involved. Depending on your prior history with Microsoft certification, you could be required to take as few as two exams to upgrade from a Windows NT 4.0 MCSE to a Windows 2000 MCSE. On the other hand, if you're starting fresh, or if you can't take advantage of the shortcuts that a prior history might offer, you'll have to take at least seven different exams to obtain certification as an MCSE for Windows 2000.

There are three categories of exams for the Windows 2000 MCSE:
*Required core exams (take one or four, depending on prerequisites)
*Designing core exams (take one of three possible choices)
*Elective exams (take any two valid electives for the Windows 2000 MCSE)

Required Core Exams You may only have to take one required core exam for the Windows 2000 MCSE because Microsoft offers free, one-time-only access to a special exam to those who have passed all three Windows NT 4.0 core exams. This special exam is identified by its exam ID, 70-240, and is named "Microsoft Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam for MCPs Certified on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0." (This exam is called "Accelerated Windows 2000" throughout this book.)

Prerequisites for the Accelerated Windows 2000 exam are:

70-210: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
70-215: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
70-216: Implementing and Administering a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure

Those who are eligible to take exam 70-240 can substitute this exam for all four of the normally required Windows 2000 required core exams, which appear above. However, if you fail your first attempt at this exam, or if you do not meet the prerequisites for that exam, you must take the four Windows 2000 required core exams to obtain certification as an MCSE for Windows 2000. This condition applies whether you're upgrading your MCSE from an earlier version of Windows or completing an MCSE for the first time.

If you visit the Microsoft Web site to examine the objectives for the 70-240 Accelerated Windows 2000 exam, you'll immediately observe that its objectives consist of pointers to the four exams above. Therefore, you'll end up covering the same ground whether you take 70-240 or the other four required core exams: 70-210, 70-215, 70-216, and 70-217. Either way, this book is designed to cover that territory to help you prepare for the subject matter involved. Refer to the companion titles-the lengthier, more detailed Exam Preps or the shorter, exam-focused Exam Crams-to dive into all the details you must master to pass 70-240 or the alternative foursome. This book is just a warm-up for your upcoming exam adventures! MCSE Windows 2000 Foundations features To help you grasp Windows 2000 administration concepts, tools, and technologies, several features in this book have been specifically designed to improve its value and usability:

Chapter objectives-Each chapter in this book begins with a set of objectives that map into related Microsoft exam objectives for the core Windows 2000 exams. This not only documents a chapter's contents, but it also ties that content back to the exams.

Illustrations and tables-Numerous screenshots and diagrams are included in most chapters to help you appreciate what the Windows 2000 interface looks and acts like, as well as to help you visualize key concepts, operational steps, and various processes.

Notes, tips, and warnings-Notes present additional helpful material related to whatever subject may be under discussion. Tips reflect the authors' experiences (often learned the hard way) about how to attack problems, how to configure Windows 2000 to meet particular requirements, or what to do to handle real-world situations. Warnings are intended to help you avoid potential pitfalls or mistakes by advertising their existence and explaining potential workarounds.

Review questions-End-of-chapter assessment consists of a set of review questions that are intended to probe what you learned as you read the chapter and to reinforce what you learned by requiring you to apply your knowledge to solve problems, create solutions, or synthesize multiple topics of study. Look for answers to review questions in the Answer Key (Appendix A) at the back of the book.

These features are intended to amplify your learning experience and to solidify your understanding of this important subject matter. They should help you get the most out of this book and make the most of what you learned when you get "up close and personal" with the Windows 2000 systems under your control.
