Synopsis
Starting with depictions over 3,000 years old of sailing vessels from tombs of Egyptian pharaohs, Michael Leek chronicles the development of nautical illustration to the present day. Artists like Willem van Velde the Elder (1611-1693), Ange-Joseph Antoine Roux (1765-1835 and William Lionel Wylie (1851-1931) sought a balance between accurate depictions and artistic sensitivity while Turner, Constable, Gericault and others leaned in the direction of artistic emphasis. Mr. Leek organizes data about significant of nautical artists in sub-chapters,and discusses techniques and materials such as paper and painting supplies.
