About the Author

Joanne Riley has been involved with raising, training and judging Newfoundlands since 1963. She and her husband are members of the Newfoundland Club of America, where JoAnn has served in many capacities through the years, including past president, and past chairperson of the both the Standard Committee and the Judges' Education Committe.. She was the first Chairman of the NCA Judges Education Committee. She was also one of the first Newfoundland Club of America Water Test judges. JoAnn began judging in 1976 and has sinced judged dogs at several national specialties and in several European countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand. Her international overview of the breed gives her a larger picture of the breed than most. JoAnn is currently approved by the American Kennel Club to judge most of the Working Group in the USA, and has judged some of those breeds abroad as well.
Evironmentalists and lovers of the outdoors, the Rileys also wrote the book "Taking Your Dog Backpacking"

It is with great pleasure that I am able to recommend the newest Newfoundland book to your bookshelf. Author JoAnn Riley brings forty years of experience in the breed. She and her artist husband, Alan, have bred and exhibited their Seamount Newfoundlands in the Pacific Northwest since 1963.

With her international overview of the breed Mrs. Riley has the larger picture of the breed. She is prejudiced only in preferring dogs that meet the breed standard. Having worked with her dogs, I know that she appreciates the true Newfoundland temperament that makes this breed so unique. In 1985 JoAnn and I co-authored The Newfoundland Handbook, published by Denlinger Publishing. In this new book she has solicited photos of Newfoundlands from around the world. Breeders graciously responded to her request for both show and candid photos. You will enjoy meeting the newest sampling of elite Newfoundlands, and you will enjoy the timeless drawings of Newfoundlands by Alan Riley. A number of changes have occurred in the breed in the last twenty years. Consistency is desirable in any breed and there appears to be greater consistency among Newfoundlands than ten or twelve years ago, especially among dogs found in the show ring. These are the dogs that are, or will be, the progenitors of future generations.

There is a greater emphasis today on the working abilities of Newfoundlands, and wider participation in working activities by Newf owners and breeders. This helps insure that these inborn characteristics will be preserved for the future of the breed. Both the AKC and the Newfoundland Club of America have added to the trials and activities for dogs and their owners to preserve the dogs¡¦ abilities to do their traditional tasks.

Research and advances in veterinary medicine have made it possible to improve health, not only through new or more effective treatments, but by better diagnostics and preventative medicine. Diagnostic screening and registries for dogs clear of certain hereditary or congenital problems, help make it possible for breeders to avoid breeding animals with these problems. It also allows buyers to choose puppies from litters of parents ¡§cleared¡¨ for the problems. At present, only the manifestation of the problem can be screened for, but genome mapping may make it possible to declare a dog genetically free of a disease. Environmentalists and lovers of the outdoors, they wrote the still popular book Taking Your Dog Backpacking in 1979. After the book was out of print, the rights were purchased by the Newfoundland Club of America. Alan donated an additional chapter to update the book, along with illustrations.
