Get Fit. Lose Weight. Have Fun.
JONEEBA! is the total body workout based on the dances and drums of Africa. It combines a uniquely designed body stretching, strengthening and toning warm-up with the powerful yet graceful dances of West Africa. It has simple movements that everyone and anyone can learn and enjoy. Incorporating body, mind, and spirit, JONEEBA! is the perfect holistic workout. But most of all, JONEEBA! is fun fitness.
“If you can walk, you can dance,” says Djoniba Mouflet, an innovator in teaching African-based movements. At his Djoniba Dance and Drum Center he teaches students from all walks of life how to develop and get in touch with their own sense of rhythm, how to breathe properly, how to listen to a drum beat, and how to perform the simple body moves that make JONEEBA! so enjoyable. “Let the rhythm take you higher. JONEEBA! is a celebration of life and health.”

Djoniba Mouflet has lived in France, Senegal, Mali and Guinea. He was trained by masters of West African drumming and dance. Since opening his highly popular New York City studio, The Djoniba Dance and Drum Centre, in 1993, he has become an ambassador of West African dance throughout the world. He has taught and performed in venues ranging from Disneyworld and Busch Gardens to concert halls across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, South America, Canada and Japan.
Joneeba is not only about movement and exercise but about connecting to the rhythm of the music. Mouflet, a dancer and professional drummer, feels that from conception we are connected to rhythm, comparing the beat of the drum to the heartbeat we heard in our mothers' wombs. Later, some of us lose that rhythm, and Mouflet proposes a way for us to rediscover it. In the first chapter, he explains how his relationship to movement and music changed on his travels through Africa. There he discovered what he calls Joneeba, or the spirit that "allows all to dance with their own accentuation, flavor, and soul." Mouflet's dance and exercise program strives to connect mind, body, and spirit to the music. In addition to explaining the cultural background of the movements, Mouflet demonstrates warm-up exercises, dances, and cool-down activities. These movements are illustrated in black-and-white photographs. The explanations are easy to follow and fun, but a video would probably be easier to use. Still, this would be a good addition for public libraries. Debra Mitts Smith, Dover Town Lib., MA
