Grade 7-10-This first book in a Christian-fiction series follows the adventures of six teens, a multicultural mix of born-again believers, at King High School in Reno, NV. The girls meet one another for the first time at a before-class prayer meeting. Tobey L'Orange, the most outgoing and self-assured, becomes the group's unofficial leader. She is also a P.K.-Preacher's Kid-and group prayer is not new to her. However, Tobey discovers the price of standing up for one's convictions when she learns of the sexual abuse of a classmate by one of the school's most popular teachers, and convinces her to report it. The friendship among the members of the prayer group grows and deepens as together they struggle with the issues of truth vs. popular opinion, right vs. wrong. Those raised in the evangelical Christian culture will be in tune with the characters and their lingo right away, but others are likely to be baffled. For example, references to the "What Would Jesus Do" Movement will leave some readers with more questions than answers. At times, the book also develops some unfortunate stereotypes. Heroine Tobey is the perfect All-American girl. The victim of the abuse, Angelica, is a Latina who is retiring, frightened, and submissive. Outsiders to the faith are too often one-dimensional bad guys. Nevertheless, this book may find an audience among those looking for more "values" literature or evangelical Christian fiction.
