Like Tess, author Sandra Byrd grew up in Arizona and loves eating LemonHeads. She also has best friends who are like sisters to her. Sandra lives in Oregon with her husband and two young children.

Grade 4-6-Tess Thomas anxiously waits to see if she is in the same sixth-grade class as her popular best friend, Colleen. Tess is still unsure of herself, having recently moved to Arizona. When she discovers that she is not in her friend's class and that Colleen's previous best friend, Lauren, is back from summer vacation, her problems begin. Tess desperately wants to be a part of the in-crowd, but the initiation involves being cruel to the class outcast, Marcia Porcetti. A new friend, Erin, helps Tess clarify her values and find her true "secret sister." This first installment in the series has no surprises or tension. Readers know that Tess will not trip Marcia in the lunch room in front of the entire school and they know that she will discover who her real friends are. Characterizations are stereotypical. Colleen and Lauren could step out of any middle-grade series. Where the book succeeds is in the portrayal of Erin's family and the way in which their everyday lives reflect their Christian beliefs. The introduction of religion is natural and almost seamless. Tess gradually accepts God's place in her life and works out her confusion in a believable way. A flawed but not totally unsuccessful effort.
