Bully-Proofing Children is a comprehensive guide on the pervasive issue of bullying in our culture. Written by a school counselor who has worked with parents and teachers on this concern, and her daughter, who still remembers experiencing and witnessing bullying as an adolescent, this book presents easy-to-follow solutions for all educators, parents, and caretakers, who can use the questioning techniques, scripts, tips, and stories to deal with this timeless subject. Children of all ages will relate to the real-life stories and their thought-provoking messages about friendship. They will also identify with the themes, characters, and feelings as they gain insight on why bullying and teasing occur and how to address the problem. These stories can be used to open communication on this often-avoided issue.

Review:
At last! Teachers, administrators, parents, youth leaders, and anyone who works with children finally have an effective anti-bullying approach! ...[This] guide is replete with examples in story form to share with children, which children will understand and appreciate. Explanations for adult readers are clear and concise. Comprehensive solutions are discussed that address current behaviors and ways to prevent future bullying behaviors. This is a must-read for teachers and administrators, indeed, all who care about putting an end to kids' bullying behaviors. (Christine M. Steigelman, second-grade teacher, Manzanita School, Newbury Park, CA)

Parents are always searching for ways to help children deal with difficult adolescent issues. Dr. Scaglione's book offers both parents and children great insight into the problem and practical solutions to cope with the issue of bullying. (Anna Merriman, assistant superintendent of instruction, Moorpark Unified School District, Moorpark, CA)

Dr. Scaglione has produced an important work on an important subject and given the high stakes of inaction, no parent or educator should underestimate how critical it is to prioritize this issue, move it to the front burner and take the correct courses of action to keep our schools emotionally safe places to learn. A wise person once said that schools should focus their improvement efforts on the 'alterable variables,' and each reader will come away from this insightful book knowing that as devastating as bullying can be, it is also a dynamic that we, as caring adults, can and should address head on. (Robert Fraisse, Ph.D., distinguished educator in residence, codirector of the educational leadership doctoral program, School of Education, California)

We know that bullying has its start as early as elementary school, and often earlier. If addressed, the behavior can go through a series of metamorphoses as children move through middle and high school. [Bully-Proofing Children] will give parents and educators a comprehensive reference source [that] will help them address bullying from grades K-12. While policies and protocols are all important, informed adults willing and intellectually equipped to act are our number-one source as we battle what is too often considered an unavoidable part of growing up. (Frank V. Auriemma, Ph.D, superintendent of schools, Pearl River School District, Pearl River, NY)

[Bully-Proofing Children] is a user-friendly, comprehensive guide to the 'bullying' crisis this generation of kids is facing. Whether read by parents, teachers, or students, these tips and tools will help everyone become proactive and address these problems before they hit crisis level, as well as intervene to support and assist kids that are being bullied and are bullying. A must-read for everyone involved with kids today. (Claire Telford, MA, MFT, executive director, Red Oaks Adolescent Counseling Center, Westlake Village, CA)
