The author’s goal in writing this series is to “instill a love of great literature in children, expand their ability to read intelligently and deeply, improve their communication abilities, and prepare them for more advanced language arts concepts.” The three key components to this series are literature, grammar and mechanics, and composition. The Student Workbook explains the lesson’s concept for the child and includes Reading Journal Pages, Dictionary Pages, and Alphabet and Sentence Puzzle Pages. Besides teaching tips and the answers to the questions in the Student Guide, the Teacher’s Guide provides scripted questions for comprehension, and also suggests an Aesop fable for each lesson and ideas for extending the lesson. 36 books that include new and old classics such as Harold and the Purple Crayon, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, or Wabi Sabi, are read aloud and are required for this curriculum--one per week. They may be purchased separately through Amazon or obtained from the library. As one mom put it, "She loves it and often asks to do her "yellow book" (I keep all the pages in a yellow binder) first when we start school each day. As a veteran homeschool mom (our oldest is 23), I believe this program is the best that I have seen for literature, grammar, and composition at this grade level. Lightning Lit & Comp for elementary grades would be a great addition to any child's education, homeschooled or public school as a "special time" with a parent in less than one hour 4-5 days per week.
