This book originated from my search for a general formula for creating beauty from randomness--a transformation perhaps more appropriate for alchemy than algorithm. On a more pragmatic level, I have also searched for ways to generate beautiful images using the computer, and--more pragmatic still--for an algorithmic means to generate attractive patterns and designs en masse, thereby proving a human designer with an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
Is there a mathematical pattern for beauty? Since the time of the ancient Greeks, artists have investigated the relationship between aesthetically pleasing designs and their geometric underpinnings. Usually this relation has been tenuous, since images built according to strict mathematical principles appear lifeless and static. Yet, as this volume demonstrates, these images can be enlivened through the carefully controlled use of random elements.
Igor Bakshee has spent years investigating the visual effects produced by different kinds of randomness. He developed the Artlandia application, which gives artists a high degree of control over a wide variety of random processes. This volume shows the results of Bakshee's investigations. His careful mixture of order and chaos results in an extraordinary encyclopedia of beautiful patterns.
