The world of work is changing. In the past, a single job was a small piece of a very large puzzle. Now, the puzzle is being cut into larger blocks, with less emphasis on the individual pieces. Alternative reward systems, total quality management initiatives and drastically changing demographics have shifted the focus from the traditional approach of analyzing a single job to looking at groups of jobs to determine how they add value in the process of producing a product or service, and how they can be shared by more than one worker. Consequently, the view of work has broadened to include how workers interrelate to add value (teams). Work is further complicated by some pieces of the work flow shifting to an external work force as pieces are outsourced to outside vendors.

This booklet provides a methodology for analyzing and documenting work, and it incorporates workflow analysis techniques.
