For a few years now, ribbon has been the thread of choice in all kinds of embroidery and needlepoint. Now, artist Le Van and a dozen other designers have picked up scissors, glue, and needle and thread to weave ribbons into 3-D objects for the home, as gifts, or to wear. Once necessary materials are described and a few techniques (e.g., a wired ribbon rose) explained, it's almost impossible for crafters to mangle project outcomes. Each of the 43 items is featured in at least one color photograph and accompanied by good instructions and a materials list. The do-it-yourself accessory could be as quick and easy as no-sew napkin rings or as complicated as an imperial pillow (i.e., ribbons artfully sewn together to form a cushion's face). Interspersed are brief tidbits about ribbons in culture--the Eve of St. Andrews marriage forecast for young Polish women, the Chinese ribbon dance, among other ethnic habits. Barbara Jacobs
