About the Author
Rebecca Rupp has written more than a dozen books for children and adults, including Weather! and How Carrots Won the Trojan War. She holds a PhD in cell biology and biochemistry and has written hundreds of articles for magazines, including Country Journal, Early American Life, Mother Earth News, Natural History, and Utne Reader. She lives in Vermont.

Grade 4-8-A lively, upbeat presentation. Chock-full of solid information, this compendium includes lots of slightly offbeat, appealing observations, such as why snow can be different colors and the names of the winds in ancient Greece. The basic format of the book is two columns per page, but the layout is often altered by color photographs, fun facts, and children's journal pages that combine serious science and youthful eye views. Twenty-two projects are included; they range in difficulty from producing a rainbow with sunlight, a shallow pan, and a mirror to making a hygrometer with a foot-long piece of human hair and some cardboard. Numerous, attention-grabbing visuals illustrate experiments, the levels of the Earth's atmosphere, the shape of snowflakes at different temperatures, and much more. Students writing reports, and family members wanting to predict weather by methods more sophisticated than looking out the window, will find lots of fascinating information here.
