Pope John Paul II described the Church's social teaching as the "application of the word of God to people's lives and the life of society, as well as to the earthly realities connected with them." That body of teaching contains "principles for reflection," "criteria for judgment," and "directives for action." Social teaching encourages Catholics and all Christian churches to analyze and critique every economic, political, and social structure in light of the Gospels. The economic, political, and social systems are human creations that human beings have the duty to continuously reform. Inspired by the Gospel and the long tradition of Christian dialogue with many cultures, the Church's social teaching affirms human dignity, the right and duty of individuals to participate in the shaping of the common good, and the designation of material goods for meeting the needs of all.

This book examines the practices of justice, peace, and reconciliation going on around us. It looks particularly at the commitment and struggle of those whose response is connected with their Christian beliefs. Their acts of courage and compassion offer witness to other Christians to respond more fully to what baptism calls us to be and to do. They can inspire other Christians as well as people who do not share their faith.-from the Introduction by Michael Duffey
