Synopsis

This book for grades 5-8 teaches measurement of length using hands-on activities with simple, edible materials. One of the keystones of the book is the use of a single round candy mint as a basic unit of length (approximately equivalent to one inch). Other activities use string cheese, graham crackers, and gum to teach concepts such as the relation of decimeters to meters and measurement with millimeters. The book is organized into 21 activities and 7 Assess Mints, which provide review and assessment throughout the course of the work. The lessons may be spread throughout a school year in order to reinforce learning about measurement at different times. In one activity, students make a licorice yardstick by tying two pieces of licorice together and trimming them to match a standard yardstick. They then practice estimating length using the yardstick. In a second part of the lesson, students flick a candy mint from their knees onto a clear area of the floor, then use the yardstick to estimate and measure how far the mint went. A Refresh Mint section of the book after this activity reviews previous work and incorporates the ideas of measuring in feet and inches and converting between them.
