The grisly machine~gun murders of seven men on the morning of February 14, 1929, by killers dressed as cops became the gangland "crime of the century" and has spawned countless histories, biographies, movies, and television specials. However, The St. Valentine's Day Massacre is the first booklength treatment of the subject and challenges the commonly held belief that Al Capone ordered the slayings to gain supremacy in the Chicago underworld. Instead, based on evidence that has only recently come to light, the authors contend the slaughter was a case of bad timing and terrible judgment on the part of a secret crew from St. Louis known to Capone's mostly Italian mob as the "American Boys." The target of the murder squad was Bugs Moran, leader of the rival North Side Gang, but the American Boys, dressed as cops and arriving in two bogus squad cars, showed up too early at the garage where the massacre took place. When no one there would admit to being Moran, the phony police stupidly mowed them all down. While much of the evidence to this effect emerged shortly after the killings, it was deftly ignored by law enforcement officials at the time. The true story began to surface in 1935 in the form of a manuscript written by the widow of one of the gunmen and corroborated by a lookout's long~suppressed confession. Indeed, law enforcement officials tried very hard not to solve the crime. They knew there was likely a politician under any rock they might turn over, and under the St. Valentine's Day rock they would have found several. In addition to revising the account of the massacre itself, this book examines the misguided political reform movement that helped Al Capone rise to power. Also worth noting is the simultaneous adoption of the Thompson submachine gun by Chicago's gangsters in 1925 and its introduction to New York City in 1928 by the same American Boys who later used the weapon in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The fate of the American Boys and those of Bugs Moran and many other underworld luminaries are also covered. The machine~gun bullets fired on the morning of February 14, 1929, marked the beginning of the end for "Scarface" Al Capone. After that bloodbath the sinister power he wielded so expertly soon dissipated, like the gun smoke in the North Clark Street garage. It took the massacre to make Capone a household name as the world's most notorious gangster, and he learned the hard way that the power to tax also could be the power to destroy.
