Wesley Millett: This is a book that took more than 10 years to write, mostly because of the depth of research and our commitment to accuracy and verification. At times, Jerry and I worked independently, each focusing on a specific aspect of the research. As the research began to give us the answers we were looking for, we joined forces to complete the research and write the book.
The central character, James Semple, is not well known in Civil War history, but at the end of the war, he was entrusted by President Jefferson Davis with the remaining gold and silver in the Confederate treasury. This book tells for the first time what happened to the treasury. It also reveals the romantic attachment between Semple and Julia Gardiner Tyler, the beautiful widow of former president of the United States, John Tyler, as they struggled to survive at the end of the war.

About the Author

Wesley Millet has been a researcher and writer for more than thirty-five years. His articles appear regularly in more than a dozen national and international publications.

Gerald White is a retired air force colonel and instructor at the Army War College. Before his retirement, he held senior leadership positions in air force intelligence. He is the author of several books on recent U.S. military operations.
