All Prose is poet William Corbett's career-spanning collection of incisive cultural criticism. The articles contained here date from the 1970s to the present. Some are published here for the first time; some are culled from the obscure journals and popular magazines and newspapers in which they originally appeared. Whatever their provenance, the pieces collected here cover a rich landscape of Books & Writers, Art & Artists, Music & Film; and everywhere, Corbett keeps his eye trained on the cresting waves of cultural zeitgeist. All Prose encapsulates an era.

William Corbett has been a poet, writer and critic for nearly 40 years. His previous books include Philip Guston's Late Work, and Furthering My Education, both memoirs; Literary New England, and New York Literary Lights, reference works; and Boston Vermont, and New & Selected, both poetry collections. He lives in Boston and teaches writing at MIT. All Prose is his first book of criticism.
New England poet and memoirist Corbett (New York Literary Lights) here gathers his critical writings and commentaries most of them brief reviews "spanning some three decades in the culture making industry." Topics include art, books, music, and film. Riddled with facts, the work is chatty, eclectic, and erudite but not academic in fact, in many places it is clearly anti-academic. In his introduction, Corbett explains that he doubts readers read books like his from front to back. The book therefore follows no rhetorical plan, wandering through Corbett's personal arrangements. The subjects critiqued are disproportionately male, and the book as a whole will appeal to readers who can evoke a scene for themselves when they hear mention of such names as St. Mark's Church, Neill Fearnley, Andrew Tavarelli, Ron Padgett, Gustaf Sobin, James Laughlin, Jules Olitski, Michael Palmer, and Second Avenue. Recommended for readers who are happy with quick sketches rather than fully developed essays and for those interested in Corbett or in the Boston and Manhattan gallery and literary scenes.
