Gordon the goat is in charge of everything in the farmyard until one day a new goose, also named Gordon, arrives and insists that he can run the farm better than Gordon the goat. The two animals compete with each other in races and contests, but it isn't until they are both stuck on top of the barn, scared and helpless, that they find out who is really in charge-Gordon the farmer!

PreSchool-Grade 2-Bossy Gordon the Goat thinks he's in charge. Then Gordon the Goose comes along and challenges him. The two animals have a series of contests to determine who's really the boss. When the final challenge leaves them both stuck on the barn roof, Farmer Gordon calmly proves who's really in charge. The goat is perfectly portrayed with a big mouth, glaring eyes, and a determined stance. With his feathers flying off the paintings, the goose is every bit as formidable. In contrast, the other farm animals look on with quiet interest. The farmer is calmest and most self-assured of all. The composition of each illustration brings movement and excitement to the pages. Particularly effective is the view looking down from the barn roof. The broad, flat areas of color have decorative and textural elements that bring plenty of detail and interest for multiple readings. These large, bright, and simple paintings are also excellent for storytime sharing. Although there is a lesson for bossy goats and geese, the humor in the text and illustrations keeps the story from being didactic.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH
