The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Like just about anything else Irish, taking the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier to your heart is easy; it's that kind of dog. Developed over many years as a farmer's dog of all work, the Wheaten herded and protected livestock, dispatched vermin, served as a hunting companion and guarded the homestead and family from any danger. Today, the descendants of those early Wheatens brighten the lives and homes of dog lovers everywhere with their endearing personalities, unswerving loyalty and eye-catching good looks. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was recognized by the AKC in 1973 and since then the breed's combination of strong assets and Irish charm have earned it a solid niche among all breeds. The Wheaten is a terrier to its toes, but is less inclined than most terriers to be argumentative. This asset shows in the breed's people-pleasing nature and adaptability to training. Truly, this dog with a coat of honey matches its lovely exterior with a heart of gold!
ROBERTA A. VESLEY has been a breeder/exhibitor of Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers since 1969, four years prior to official American Kennel Club recognition. She is also the author of The Complete Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, published by Howell Book House in 1992. Currently enjoying an active retirement, Roberta joined the staff of the AKC in 1975 and served as its Library Director from 1980 until 1991. She was a founding member and past President of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Metropolitan New York, a Director of the SCWTCA and a Director and Secretary of the Long Island Kennel Club. She has been a guest curator for The Dog Museum of America and has written on dogs for World Book, Reader's Digest and AKC Gazette. Roberta Vesley is also a member of the Dog Writers Association of America. She and her husband, Alan, have two daughters and live in Port Washington, New York.
